Q: How will I know if I am a required to make the $2.00 medication copayment?

A: You are required to pay the $2.00 medication copayment if:

  1. You are a nonservice-connected veteran receiving outpatient treatment and your annual income is greater than the maximum annual pension rate; or
  2. You are a service-connected veteran rated less than 50% receiving outpatient treatment for a nonservice-connected condtion and your annual income is greater than the maximum annual pension rate.

Q: Will my medications be withheld if I am unable to pay the required $2.00 copayment?

A: NO. Medications prescribed will be issued regardless of your ability to make a copayment if you are unable to make a copayment when you receive the prescribed medications, an account will be established for you at the hospital. VA will pursue collection of the amount you owe, but will not withhold future medications if payment is not received. If you are unable to make full payment immediately, you may discuss a repayment plan with your MCCR Coordinator or Fical Officer. You may also request a waiver fo your medication copayment.

Q: Is the means test copayment charge the same as my private insurance deducitible?

A: NO. The means test copayment fee is not related to your individual health insurance policy. All discretionary care veterans, whether they have private insurance or not, will be assessed the means test copayment charges. The VA will not charge you for the amount of your private insurance deductible.

Q: Some insurance carriers will cover the cost of the means test copayment charges. If my insurance company does not cover the full cost of these copayments, will I be asked to pay anything?

A: Yes, if your insurance company has not paid the full amount of the means test copayment, you will be charged for the remaining balance.
