The Law States That:
  1. Anyone 18 years of age and older who transfers ownership of a registered vehicle (OLD vehicle) to another person or who loses possession (by theft, accident, repossession), AND
  2. intending to transfer his registration (aka plates) to a newly acquired new or used vehicle (NEW vehicle) of the same type and having the same number of wheels, MAY
  3. attach the plates issued with the OLD registration to the NEW vehicle and operate the NEW vehicle for a period beginning on the date of ownership/possession of the OLD vehicle is transferred and ending at 5:00PM on the 7th calendar day following the transfer of the OLD vehicle
  4. the title or bill of sale AND copy of the registration being transferred MUST be carried by the operator of the NEW vehicle during the 7-Day grace period.

    Keep In Mind That the 7-Day Law Does Not Apply To:
  1. anyone under 18 years of age
  2. anyone retaining ownership or possession of the OLD vehicle (aka in the process of selling it, keeping it until it can be repaired, etc.)
  3. vehicles of different types and having a different number of wheels

THIS LAW HAS NOT CHANGED OR AFFECTED MASSACHUSETTS LAW CHEPTER 90D, SECTION 15, which requires the title of a vehicle to be delivered to the new owner or the registrar at the time the vehicle is delivered to the new owner, NOR HAS IT CHANGED OR AFFECTED THE REGULATIONS OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL (940 CMR 5.04.11), making it unfair or deceptive act or practice for a seller to fail to deliver the title to the new owner at the time of purchase.
